Sukkah website seeks photos of your sukkah

SHARON — Sukkot could probably be referred to as the “festival of engineering” —  right about now, Jews all over the world are putting their work hats on and dragging wooden frames out of the garage, screwing together pieces of aluminum pipe, and cutting off branches to serve as the skakh. These sukkahs live gloriously for eight days (longer if people like to keep it up or get lazy), and then they return to hidden recesses.

Aaron Ginsburg, of Sharon, Mass., wanted to give sukkahs a little more shelf life. Last year, he put together a rudimentary website for people to send their photos to (www.sukkahsoftheworld.org). He had to jump start it himself, driving around and taking photos of sukkahs from his car. He was able to “put up” 16 sukkahs online, and, as “people kept giving me ideas,” more and more types began to arrive: Sukkahs at night, sukkahs in the snow, even those that had blown down in heavy winds. The now had 79 sukkahs.

Ginsburg, originally from Newport, wanted to expand his horizons this year and try to get more of an international presence of sukkahs.  His new website is a little rough around the edges, but he has pictures in the works from Shanghai, Sweden and Israel.

As for his sukkah, he says it’s nothing special. “It’s a gigantic canvas yellow thing… I got it from the used sukkah market.”
